Giving Initiatives and Alternatives, Inc. along with the Plainfield Against Killing Committee is sponsoring a family friendly community event on May 28, 2011 at Plainfield High School located at 950 Park Avenue to express our concerns over the violence AND to provide SOLUTIONS to some of the problems. Gloria Taylor -Gloria Taylor is Principal of the Great Falls Academy Alternative high School in Paterson,and former Teacher and Administrator in the Plainfield Public Schools for 16 years. A longtime Plainfielder, and licensedClergy, Rev. Taylor is the wife of the former Mayor of Plainfield, the late Rev. Richard L."Rick" Taylor. Rev. Taylor has been in public service for over 30 years and considers her work with youth and their Families as her life long "ministry in the marketplace". Ato-Bakari Chase - an award-winning educator with over 12 years of experience working in Urban America. A dynamic and passionate speaker, He leads workshops, forums, and conferences in topics ranging from African Centered Education to Rites of Passage Male Empowerment Programs. He has created or assisted in developing social, political and cultural activities that promote peace, unity, respect, love and self-determination amongst people of African descent. He is a social and community activist, a mentor, a husband, father and brother Renata Hernandez - Board of Education & Chair of the Community and Schools Committee
Bio - Renata was born, educated and currently resides in Plainfield, NJ. She is the President of the Board of Education and has committed to the reform the manner inwhich the Board performs it fudiciary responsibilities to help revive a failing school system. She is the mother of a PAAAS student, married and holds an MBA Harold 'The Shadow' Knight - Boxing Expert [email protected]. He was a classy boxer/puncher from Plainfield ,New Jersey who appeared destined for greatness. Harold “the Shadow” Knight took a glossy 19-0 record into the ring in an attempt to win a world title in 1988. A regular face at the High School and in the community and you can hear him on BKS1 Radio regularly. Karen Elaine Davis - Advocate Against Domestic Violence (bio) Karen Elaine Davis, life long resident of Plainfield, Medical Records Coordinator of Aristacare at Norwood Terrace author of poetry book Grown & Sexy the Spoken Lyric, Advocate of domestic violence since 2001. Vice president of PTO of the Barack Obama Green Charter High School, as well as volunteering in school functions for all of my children and keeping them involved with their community. Carmen Brown - Vocalist Carmen is an accomplished songwriter/performer and the consummate business artist. She also has opened for or worked with various artist/producers including: Walter Hawkins, Vicki Winans, Usher, Faith Evans, Joe, Will Downing, Nas, The Wu-Tang Clan, Teddy Riley, Rick James, Aaron Neville, Tom Jones, and Bruce Springstein. Only to name a few. Jamil Muhammad longtime struggler for Freedom, Justice and Equality as a member of the Nation of Islam with Minister Louis Farrakhan for the last 33 years. He is from the "OTHER" Queen City of Cincinnati, Ohio, attended Howard University in Washington, DC and has been a steady presence in Plainfield for over 30 years as a lieutenant and understudy of our brother, MINISTER ABDUL KARRIEM MUHAMMAD." Everett Boatwright - Activist born and raise in plfd...went to the army after high school...married for 28yrs...three kids two grands....moved to easton, pa. in 2004...black seal boiler operater...owner and c.e.o of boatwright and sons floor care....motivation speaker for halfway houses and prison rehab's...... Carmen Salavarrieta Carmen Salavarrieta, a native of Columbia, came to Plainfield, New Jersey in 1969. For over 30 years Carmen has dedicated herself to helping those who are unable to help themselves. Carmen is a board member of El Centro Hispanoamericano and the Neighborhood Health Services Corporation, previously known as the Plainfield Health Center. In March 2009, she established a non-profit organization, Angels in Action and three months later secured a building where classes in English and literacy are offered. Ron Alston - Ceo of My Father Knows Best, Inc.
BORN IN 1961 IN NEWARK TO A GREAT MOTHER AND A NO" GOOD FATHER. SOLD DRUGS AND WAS IN A GANG IN NEWARK AS A KID THEN GOD CHANGED HIS LIFE. HAS BEEN MENTORING FROM 1988-2011 TO THE COMMUNITY. GOD PUT ME HERE TO HELP MY COMMUNITY. HAS A GREAT WIFE FOR OVER 23 YEARS AND A LOVING SON Aaron Muhammad - Elevated Places, Inc. [email protected] Karen Hall - Assisted with the recent Truce by Gang members. She is currently employed at the Youth Advocate Program in Newark NJ as an advocate for at -risk youth. She is also the Director for the Youth Council teen Center located in Plainfield NJ. Ms. Hall has worked with the Youth in the city for many years...She also works with the Union County Juvenile Probation Dept. finding different sites for the youth to complete their mandated community service hours. The future of our youth is her passion....Ms. Hall is also a foster parent |
